Friends of ANCHOR is a local charity dedicated to improving cancer and haematology care in the North of Scotland.

Research is a key part of Friends of ANCHOR’s commitment to patients. It plays an important part in driving forward cancer and haematology care.

The charity funds pioneering projects that look into the cause, diagnosis and treatment of various cancers. Since 2010 it has paid out over £750,000 for 80 seed studies.

These important lab studies form the building blocks for potential breakthroughs. They allow scientists to build compelling cases for major funding to improve outcomes for patients.

Every year the charity commits up to £100,000 for pilot projects alone – and further funding for larger-scale, one-off projects. The research is carried out in partnership with the local universities and health board.

This year the charity funds 5 studies looking into the following fields:

Further, Friends of ANCHOR also has a dedicated research fellowship programme. The fellowships are available in the fields of oncology and haematology. They support clinical and non-clinical professionals allowing them time for research. This year the charity has introduced a new, 18-month fellowship for a promising scientist to progress their career.

The charity is unique in that 100% of every donation made, or fundraising effort, goes directly to the cause, as the organisation’s administration costs, including the salaries of the fundraising team, are fully covered by Aberdeen-based company Balmoral Group.
