PANDOS is an international, prospective, observational cohort study. Prospective means data are collected going forward. Observational means that data about study participants are being collected during routine procedures. Nothing about the care of the participants is changed.
The main aim of the PANDOS study is to document the use of opioids around the time of surgery (and it’s safety) in Europe.
After surgery, many people are prescribed pain relief medication. The use of such medication in the year after surgery is not well understood. This study investigates people’s use of pain relief
- in the month before they have surgery,
- while they are in hospital after surgery,
- and up to one year after they have had surgery.
The study is specifically interested in pain relievers of the morphine family (sometimes called opioids) and any unwanted effects they may have. The study aims to recruit 10,000 people undergoing surgery. It is taking place in many hospitals across the UK and Europe, including Aberdeen.
Our local PANDOS research team has been busy this week. They recruited 40 participants and have met their recruitment target. Amazing work! Well done Amanda, Lorraine, Fiona, Jill, Nassar and Patrice.
